I-80 open back following a large grass fire

DAWSON COUNTY, Neb. (KSNB) – Eastbound Interstate 80 between Brady and Cozad is open again after a large grass fire in Dawson County forced it to close on Thursday.

The Nebraska State Patrol said the eastbound I-80 was closed at the Brady exit for more than an hour. Traffic had to be diverted to Highway 30. Westbound I-80 remained open at this time.

The fire spread for 4.5 miles along the Paulsen Gravel Pit (Willow Island Road) in Gothenburg.

There is no damage to the structures.

NSP thanked the local Lexington, Cozad and Gothenburg fire departments and others for bringing the blaze under control.

They said it was the ‘we’re starting to see grass fires across Nebraska’ time of year. Please be aware of the danger of fire. They said it doesn’t take much to start a grass fire.

NSP shared a dashboard video near Gothenburg showing how fast these fires can move.

NSP said: “Fortunately, the soldier was aware of his surroundings, while moving traffic to the outside lane, and was able to escape.”
