Cannondale’s SmartSense was honored as a 2022 Fast Company Innovation by Design Awards Finalist in the Transportation category and received an Honorable Mention in the Wellness category.
The Innovation by Design Awards, found in the October 2022 issue of Fast Company, honor designers and companies that solve today’s most critical problems and anticipate tomorrow’s pressing problems. The competition, now in its 11th year, showcases a range of blue-chip companies, emerging startups and hungry young talent. It is one of the most coveted design awards in the industry.
Cannondale has opened the door to road cycling with the introduction of its SmartSense technology, instilling confidence and adding convenience to cycling through an actively intelligent system of lights and radar. It is the first technology of its kind to actively communicate with the rider, the bike and the environment powered by a single battery.
“We are honored to be recognized by the design community. Our mission is to inspire and enable the future of cycling,” said Henning Schroeder, senior vice president of product development at Cannondale. “The Cannondale product is driven by the desires of the rider, and that’s where we reach out to help solve a problem. SmartSense provides better awareness while creating increased visibility so the rider can see and be seen more effectively while cycling. It is designed to make road riding more enjoyable for experienced cyclists, more inviting for new cyclists and more convenient for everyone.
“A common theme among this year’s Innovation by Design winners, which range from healthcare interfaces to self-driving technology, is permanence,” said Brendan Vaughan, editor-in-chief of Fast Company. “The products that were presented to our editors and judges went against our fast-paced culture, while demonstrating a more inclusive view of design.”
